UGA / IDD

The University of Georgia's Instructional Design and Development (IDD) Program is a highly regarded graduate program designed to provide students with "knowledge of cutting-edge computer and multimedia technology and its application in diverse educational contexts, such as K-12 education, higher education, and training situations in business and industry."

The IDD program is a two-year, cohort-based program; one of the two classes offered each semester is held online, while the other typically takes place face-to-face at UGA's Gwinnett campus in Lawrenceville.

One aspect of UGA's IDD program that sets it apart from other instructional design programs is the project-based Learning, Design, and Technology Studio, a core series of courses based on constructionist philosophy and heavily influenced by the theory of situated cognition. Students work both individually and collaboratively in the Studio, exploring various software tools in order to produce learning artifacts, first of the student's choice and then for an actual client.

About the LDT Studio

The University of Washington's Virtual Worlds Certificate Program is a nine-month cohort-based program which teaches students to "build and evaluate virtual worlds and to optimize their use in business, social and educational applications."

Classes take place primarily in the virtual world of Second Life, although virtual 'field trips' are also used to introduce students to various virtual world platforms.

Students learn how to navigate and communicate in virtual worlds, create simple 3D objects, use those objects to design complex 3D structures, add interactivity to those objects and structures using LSL scripts, and design and develop effective, interactive, and immersive 3D virtual learning environments.
